The United Way Endowment Fund

In 1995, Miss Isabel Klenk made a generous unrestricted bequest to the United Way of Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties. Her bequest was used as the initial deposit to start the United Way Endowment Fund. Through the United Way Endowment Fund, managed by the Springfield Foundation, an individual's vision of an improved quality of life in Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties can be kept alive for generations to come. Just as Miss Klenk did, you too can help lead the vision to build a stronger community in Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties.

How is a United Way Endowment Fund gift different from your regular annual gift? First the principal is permanently restricted. Endowed gifts are pooled together and invested. The endowment fund investments generate income which is used to support the United Ways mission. As the United Way Endowment Fund grows in size, so will the income it generates. This is what makes an endowment gift special-it continues to provide support for our community in perpetuity.

Many people regularly give financially to charities of their choice. When they are gone, their support is dearly missed. By making a gift to the United Way Endowment Fund now, you can make sure that support is available to help community organizations both now and well into the future.

Through a gift to The United Way Endowment Fund, you have an opportunity to make a lasting gift to the people of our community.

Endowment Gifts Keep on Giving in Perpetuity
You may make a gift to the United Way Endowment Fund in a number of ways depending upon your particular circumstances. You can honor or remember a special friend or someone you love by making a gift in their name or memory to the United Way Endowment Fund. Gifts to the Fund provide a unique and lasting way to honor individuals on special occasions. The following may be helpful as you consider the best way to make a gift.

Cash
Gifts to the United Way Endowment Fund in cash or by check are among the most popular ways to contribute. Making a cash gift provides you with an immediate receipt as well as the convenience of completing the gift in a short period of time.

Wills or Bequests
Giving through your will can be a convenient way to leave a lasting legacy to the United Way of Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties. You may give a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or all or part of the remainder to the United Way Endowment Fund.

Stocks and Securities
One of the most advantageous ways of giving to the United Way Endowment Fund is with stocks, securities or mutual funds that have appreciated in value. If you have owned these investments for more than one year, you may deduct the full fair market value as a charitable contribution to the United Way Endowment Fund and bypass capital gains taxes.

Insurance
For most of us, our life insurance needs change over time. Policies that are no longer needed can make a meaningful and convenient gift. The United Way of Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties may be named as beneficiary of a life insurance policy, either a new policy or one already in force.

When United Way is named owner and beneficiary, future annual premiums may be deducted as charitable contributions. In this way, a special gift can be made on the installment plan and also generate a gift which is much larger than its cost.

Real Estate
You may transfer title to a residence, a farm or other real estate to the United Way Endowment Fund. Certain transfers allow you to retain the right to live there for life and receive any income the property produces. A tax deduction is available in the year of the gift. The United Way board must approve the acceptance of any gift of real estate.

Trusts
Charitable remainder trusts make it possible for you to make a gift to the United Way Endowment Fund and receive an income for life.

Through a charitable lead trust, United Way receives the income from the trust and after a specific period of time, the trust terminates and the assets of the trust are distributed to the beneficiaries named by the donor.
